What is KICKBALL?
Kickball (courtesy of Wikipedia) is a playground game and also a competitive league game, similar to baseball, invented in the United States in about 1942. American World War II correspondent, Ernie Pyle, reported it being played by U.S. soldiers during the North African campaign, 1942-1943. It is typically played on a softball diamond with a 10- to 16- inch (250- to 400 mm ) inflated rubber ball. The pitcher bowls the ball towards the catcher, and the “batter” kicks it with his foot. In some games, batters request a certain type of pitch — rolling, bouncing slightly, or bouncing 1’ to 2’ off the ground. Once the ball, is kicked, the batter’s objective is to get to reach base. In addition to tagging a base to get a forced runner out, or getting a runner out by touching him/her with a held ball, fielders may throw the ball at a runner to get him/her out (though hitting a runner above the shoulders with a thrown ball is often either discouraged or illegal; the latter being the more common rule.).
WHAT IS RECESSTIME KICKBALL?
We are Oregon’s original independent kickball league. We’ve been kicking balls and toasting frosty beverages since 2003. We have a huge passion for kickball and are eager to watch the game evolve each season. We are proud to host as many teams that want to play kickball and to grow in an inclusive manner just like we did in 5th grade, only this time, no one is the last one picked!
WHO PLAYS KICKBALL?
We’re a thriving group of players in Portland, Oregon who love kickball and want to spread the joy of our childhood passion with anyone who wants to share a field. We are of various ages (all over 21), professions, backgrounds and playing ability. We all share the love of kickball and good beer.

WHERE DO YOU PLAY?
We play on several parks and at schools around the Portland area. Check the schedule page for exact locations and game times.
WHEN CAN I REGISTER?
Registration opens approximately six weeks before the season starts.
I THINK I WANT TO HAVE MY OWN TEAM…HOW CAN I DO THIS?
Go to the registration page and click “create a new team.” You will create a team code, which you will send to your potential teammates. Your teammates will sign up under your team name and you will be notified. You may also check your roster and players’ contact information by logging into the registration page to view your team.
If it’s the off-season, please email us and let us know your team name and on a scale of 1-5 how likely this team of yours is to actually take the field come kick-off time. (1 being “just curious” and 5 being we have been shining our Chuck Taylors® since middle-school just waiting for the chance to take the field again!)
HOW MANY PLAYERS ON A TEAM?
Typically, teams range in size from about 15 to18 players. Since teams field 11 players defensively, you will want to make sure that you have substitutes available. If you need help with extra players, we always have free agents looking to join a team! Teams are capped at 18 players. Check out the kickball forum on recesstimesports.com for free agents or teams looking for players.
CAN I FIELD AN ALL-MALE TEAM?
Sorry… co-ed or bust! If you check out the rules page you will learn that you must have at least four males and four females in the outfield at all times.
HOW MUCH TO BE A PART OF THIS?
$55 will get you on a team, ten regular season games plus playoffs (everybody makes the playoffs!) a t-shirt and an invitation to the memorable end-of-season party!
END OF SEASON PARTY?
Yup… on the last day of the season, we will have our end of season tourney to determine the season champion. That night we will celebrate the season and crown the Kickball King and Queen and start looking towards the next season.
HOW DO I REGISTER?
We only accept registration on line. Its quick and easy, just like us! Head to recesstimesports.com click kickball, then registration. If you just want to get on a team, select that you are a free agent, but, ideally, you should advertise a bit about yourself in the forum (Do you like Piña Coladas? Do you like getting caught in the rain?) to make sure you get on a team that you like.
BUDWEISER IS YOUR SPONSOR? SWEET? CAN WE BOOZE ON THE FIELDS?
Yes and no. A lot of our fields are acquired through the Portland Public Schools. Since the kids cannot drink or smoke at school neither can we because: ALCOHOL AND TOBACCO ARE PROHIBITED ON SCHOOL FIELDS.
However, when we secure fields through Portland Parks and Recreation, such as Overlook Park, Alberta Park, Buckman Field and Grant Park; we also purchase alcohol permits. Thus, you can drink BL smoothies and cheer for your teammates as they bunt, boot and/or rally around the bases on these fields.
I’D LIKE TO FEATURE YOU IN OUR NEWSPROGRAM / NEWSPAPER, CAN I DO THAT?
Sure thing, we always have time for the press, please contact our league manager or founder:
